Galway Bohs 5 Oughterard 2
Bohs U18s got their Championship season back on track with an impressive victory at Miller's Lane on Saturday. The away side, who were something of a bogey team for Bohs last season, proved a tough and formidable opponent once again and took a deserved lead after half an hour from a free kick. With half time looming, Bohs got back on level terms when a lovely through ball from Daviti Tsikarishvili released Rowan Murphy who showed great composure to round the keeper and calmly slot the ball home to level things up.
The Bohs lads wasted no time building on their equaliser when a beautifully delivered corner from Noah Ward was bundled home from close range by goal poacher supreme, Jed Shaughnessy, to leave it 2-1 at half-time. The Moycullen Maldini was also responsible for the one of the most spectacular goal line clearances ever witnessed at Miller's Lane or possibly anywhere else in Galway as he performed an acrobatic defensive manoeuvre that the Karate Kid would have been proud of to prevent a certain Oughterard goal into an empty net.
The physical aggression and flying tackles continued in the second half and despite a good positive start by Bohs, it was the away side who made it 2-2 when their attacker capitalised on an uncharacteristic error by the Bohs keeper.
However, the sides weren't level for long as Daviti produced a sublime free kick to put the home side back in front and a brilliant finish by Daniel Maguire from the edge of the box made it 4-2 to give Bohs a bit of breathing space in the closing stages. The Oughterard lads kept battling away and they almost got back in the match only for a brilliant close range save by Adam Mulhaire but the three points were secured when Jay Kimmings got his first goal in Bohs colours when smashing home the fifth in the last few minutes.
There were lots of positives to take from a comprehensive victory with notable performances from Bohs new boys Jay Kimmings and Ryszard Marazewski while it was great to see Daniel Maguire back on the pitch where he showed glimpses of his class and guile with some lovely touches on the ball. At left back, Lazare Clairon Hardy was rock solid in his decision making and defensive role while Rowan Murphy worked his socks off and got a deserved goal for his efforts to get his team back in the game in the first half.
I'm sure though that everyone in attendance at Miller's Lane will agree that Noah Ward was the best player on the pitch on Saturday afternoon. The Bish baller was quite sensational on the right wing and at one stage in the first half he left four Oughterard defenders in his wake as he carved open yet another opportunity for the Bohs attackers.
When his teammates needed him most at 1-0 down, Noah worked tirelessly and helped out his defence with some lung bursting runs to get Bohs on the front foot and back into the match. In this type of form, he is unplayable and long may it continue for club and school. Up next for the lads is a Connacht Cup fixture at home to Renmore on Saturday ⚽⚽🔴⚪
